Accident Guide in New York

Here are some tips to follow if you or a loved one were involved in a vehicle accident.

  • Never leave the scene of an accident, It is against the law. 
  • If there are no injuries but just damages to the vehicle, you must exchange contact information, license numbers, phone numbers, and insurance company information.
  • If there is serious damage all involved drivers must file an accident report.
  • Never been in an accident before -- Don't panic and take this process seriously. Failure to file within 10 days can lead to a suspended license.
  • If a person is seriously injured, or killed, do not leave the scene before the police arrive, this is a crime. 
  • You must file a police report and remain at the scene until the police give you the OK to leave. 
  • If you need a copy of the accident report you can either contact the police department that presided over the incident, or submit to the DMV a police report request (Form MV-198C).

If you believe that you were not at-fault for the accident so not attempt to handle things on your own.  Seek the advice of a personal injury attorney that knows injury and accident law.
