Where to Drink For Dirt Cheap

Our weekly drinking column highlights the best happy hours and cheapest brews in the neighborhood

The weather is finally getting nicer, but paying $6 for a brew is enough to keep most people at home. Luckily for you, we’ve rounded up the best drink specials, happy hours, and flat-out cheapest beers that can be found in the neighborhood.

Alibi (242 Dekalb Ave., near Vanderbilt Ave, Fort Greene; no phone)

The Alibi makes no apologies about being a dive bar. The bar stools are still held together by duct tape, and don’t even think about using the bathrooms. But for a daily happy hour that offers $3 drinks and stunningly cheap $1 mugs of Bud, we’re willing to bet you can probably handle it.

Rustik Tavern (471 Dekalb Ave., near Kent Ave.; 347-406-9700; www.rustiktavern.com)

Although it’s located near Pratt, you’re more likely to find long-time neighborhood residents than college students here. Rustik Tavern ends up getting particularly packed during happy hour, when draft beers are buy one, get one free. Take your newly earned free beer over to the gorgeous patio that’s perfect for those warm summer nights, or stay inside and listen to local bands perform during the week.

Habana Outpost (757 Fulton St. at S. Portland St, Fort Greene; 718-858-9545; www.cafehabana.com

New York City’s first eco-eatery is designed to reduce wasteful consumption, and their cheap drinks mean the same thing will apply to your wallet. Delicious Sixpoint beers are available for $2.75 all day-long, in addition to their expensive Latin food.

Mullanes Bar and Grill (71 Lafayette Ave., near South Elliott Pl., Fort Greene; 718- 797-7606; www.mullanesbrooklyn.com)

This boisterous sports bar is the perfect place to cheer on your favorite sports team, with seven plasma screens and an HD projector showing the biggest games all day. Perhaps just as exciting is their beer and a shot special for $6 during happy hour. Just make sure to follow the golden rule and take the shot before your beer.

Sweet Revenge (348 Franklin Ave., between Greene Ave., and Lexington Ave., Clinton Hill; 718-398-2472)

This local bar caters to a younger crowd, and the student-friendly drink prices are a reflection of that. Draft beers are just $3 during happy hour, while well drinks are only $2. Be sure to check out the grown-up sand box in the back.

Walgreen’s (379 Myrtle Ave., between Adelphi St. and Clermont Ave., Fort Greene; 718- 403-9112; http://www.walgreens.com)

We’re aware this isn’t a bar, but it’s also THE cheapest beer you will find in the neighborhood. Their new house brand, Big Flats 1901 Lager, will set you back $4 for a six-pack. You have to purchase it before 9:00 p.m., but for less than 70 cents a can, there’s no shame in starting the night early.
