The Toren's Tower of Trash

Piles of garbage bags and a dumpster are blocking a sidewalk and irritating pedestrians.

Pedestrians are thumbing their noses at the piles of garbage stacked outside of the Toren luxury condo building that are forcing them to walk into oncoming traffic on Myrtle Avenue.

A pair of matresses and dozens of large trash bags are stacked across the sidewalk at Prince Street in front of a dumpster that is also full of refuse, rendering the walkway impassable. To make matters worse, a car was parked on Tuesday right in front of all the trash, making pedestrians literally walk into the path of cars coming from Flatbush Avenue.

“That trash has been there for too long, that’s for sure,” said Patricia Coakely, who had just sidled in between the car and the stacked garbage. “The city should have collected all that stuff by now!”

But it’s not the city’s garbage collection services — which were thrown into disarray by the terrible weather that began in December — that are to blame for the trashy obstacle course outside the Toren.

“Sanitation has missed Saturday and Tuesday collections this week reportedly due to weather,” said an official with the building’s management. “No new location [for the trash] is planned.”

That certainly won’t make our anonymous tipster happy, who said he filed a complaint with 311 about the “ridiculous mountain of trash blocking the sidewalk” on Tuesday.
