Tears for Beers! Moe's Last Night a Somber Celebration

The diverse "bar family" swapped stories over drinks one last time.

Regulars raised their glasses for the last time at Moe’s on Wednesday night, lamenting the loss of one of the neighborhood’s most beloved watering holes.

Barflies shared stories, hugs and hot wings beginning at 3 p.m., and by the time last call rolled around emotions were running high.

“I’m going to stop drinking,” joked Jay Fingers, a regular. “I’ll never find the same vibe and same feeling of family. I’m not going to get that anywhere else.”

And like any family, Moe’s had its share of drama. In November the bar's owners announced plans to close due to failed negotiations with the building’s landlord.

Regulars had a glimmer of hope in February, when Moe’s announced of negotiations. But after rumors surfaced of opening in the location at S. Portland and Lafayette avenues, it became clear that the watering hole known for its diverse clientele was doomed.

Although the “bar family” had been steeling itself for such an outcome, the news hit hard.

“I’ve hung out in many bars that closed, but it’s about what Moe’s fostered,” said Brian Grosz, the bald-headed man seen most afternoons at the bar. “We go to each other’s weddings, we go on trips together.”

After throwing a few back, drinkers lamented the new bar moving in, which will cater to a crowds coming from BAM and the Barclays Center arena.

“If I see anybody I know at Navada, that's it! I'm calling them out on Facebook!” said Michael "Peaches" Fortner.

As the bar filled up and the beer supply dwindled, Moe’s owners Ruby Lawrence and Chelsea Altman gave heartfelt speeches, shed a few tears, and thanked their loyal patrons.

“Even though things are changing, and the arena is coming, I’ve realized every night that at Moe’s New York is still here,” Lawrence told the crowd.

James Brown (seriously), a longtime employee, was concerned for his regular customers.

“After Moe’s closes, I don’t know how any of these motherf---rs are going to get laid!” he said.
