UPDATE: Putnam Avenue Closed For New Pedestrian Plaza

Update, 2:39 p.m.: Councilwoman Leticia James, D-Brooklyn, said she had a conversation with Brooklyn DOT commissioner Joseph Palmieri on concerns brought by some residents and business owners about the Putnam pedestrian plaza.

James would not go into detail on the specific issues raised. However, she confirmed that talks included the restoration of an eliminated bus stop on the B26 line along Putnam Avenue.

Meanwhile, a resident reported that construction had resumed Monday afternoon on the stretch of street and adjacent sidewalk slated for the outdoor plaza.

, crews working for the city Deparment of Transporation began work Friday on a pedestrian plaza on Putnam Avenue between Grand Avenue and Fulton Street.

The street is now blocked to vehicular traffic with plastic barriers, with the road running north of Putnam Triangle showing signs of grading work.

According to city DOT, construction on the outdoor plaza is scheduled to be complete by the end of the week, with the arrival of gravel, planters, tables and chairs at the site.

Members of Fulton Area Coming Together, a group opposed to the project, met with Councilwoman Letitia James, D-Brooklyn, last week to discuss a possible delay in construction to allow for more public input, according to area resident Scheille Hagan.

Requests for comment from James' office on the meeting were not immediately returned.
