Endorsement Round-up: Jeffries Turns Down Charter School Support

Facing criticism from opponents, candidate opts to reject donations from Bloomberg-backed group.

Assemblyman Hakeem Jeffries announced Thursday that his campaign would reject the support of a charter school advocacy group bankrolled by Mayor Michael Bloomberg.

StudentsFirstNY had launched a six-figure "independent expenditure campaign" in support of Jeffries’ run—but Jeffries’ camp said it wanted nothing to do with the money, according to the New York Daily News.

In the News' story, a Jeffries campaign spokeswoman claimed that the group, as an independent committee, shouldn't be involved in the race.

"The Jeffries campaign does not believe that independent expenditures have a place in this race. We did not seek it, do not want it and will win without it,” said the spokeswoman, Lupe Todd.

At at Brooklyn Music School on Monday, Green Party candidate Colin Beavan slammed Jeffries——for taking $100,000 from the group.
