'I Love You' Bandits: This Week's Police Blotter

A rundown of crimes reported in the 88th Precinct, which covers Fort Greene and Clinton Hill.

The following arrest information was supplied by the New York Police Department. It does not indicate a conviction.

Teen Robbed in Grocery Store

A 14-year-old male was robbed at a grocery store on 314 Myrtle Ave. between the BQE and Fort Greene Park. The robbery occurred on Sept. 19 at around 10:30 a.m. The victim walked into the grocery store and was approached from behind by the suspect, who demanded the victim give up his wallet. The suspect took $26 out of the wallet, handed it back to the victim, and fled the scene. An NYPD security camera located on Myrtle Ave and Washington Park should give police some help in identifying the suspect.

Man is Victim of Armed Robbery

A 29 year old man was robbed of his iPhone 4, worth about $600, at a grocery store on Dekalb and Carlton avenunes. The robbery occurred on Sept. 19 at around 9:20 a.m. The suspect bumped into the victim from behind, walked past the victim and proceeded to display a silver handgun, demanding that the victim, “Give it up.” The victim handed over the phone and the suspect fled southbound on Carlton Avenue. Police conducted a search directly after the crime occurred but did not turn up any results.

Suspects Make Off with $750 Worth in Early Morning Robbery

On Sept. 20 at 1 a.m. on Gates Avenue and St. James Place, a man was approached from behind by two suspects, one of which displayed a silver handgun, telling the victim to “empty his pockets.” The suspects fled on foot and were not found after a search of the area by NYPD. The suspects made off with about $750 worth of items, including an iPhone, a Prada wallet, two debit cards, and $100 in cash.

Woman Robbed by “I Love You” Bandits

On Sept. 20, two thieves stole an iPhone worth $500 dollars from a woman on Greene Ave between Clinton and Vanderbilt at around 4 p.m. One of the suspects approached the woman from behind, bearhugged her, and told her “I love you,” while the other suspect removed the victim’s cell phone from her pants pocket.

Woman Choked and Robbed by Boyfriend

At 10:30 a.m. on Sept. 20 at Hudson Walk and Myrtle Avenue, a woman was arguing with her boyfriend about money when he choked her and said she wouldn’t be getting anything. The woman’s boyfriend then went into the victim’s purse, took $500, and also took the victim’s Samsung cell phone.

Handgun Hold-up in Candy Store is Connected with String of Neighborhood Robberies

The candy store at 719 Fulton St. between St Felix Street and S Elliot Place was robbed on Sept. 21 at 10:30 a.m. The suspect walked into the store brandishing a silver and black handgun, making off with $250 from the register. The suspect, Darryl Meachem has been caught that have recently plagued the area.

Victim Fights Back Against Would-be Robber

A young man was almost robbed of his $300 Dr. Dre Beats headphones on Sept. 21 at about 3 p.m. inside the subway station stairwell on Fulton Street and S. Portland Avenue. The suspect pushed the victim and grabbed his headphones, but the victim put up a fight, managing to get his headphones back from the thief. The teen suspect fled to street level and was quickly apprehended by police.

iPhone Stolen in G Train Station

On Sept. 21 at 7:20 p.m., a man was attempting to enter the G train station on Lafayette and Washington avenues when two suspects hit him from behind on the head and stole his $400 iPhone. The suspects were seen fleeing to street level.

Woman Falls Victim to iPhone Snatching

At 10 p.m. on Sept. 22, a woman was walking on Flatbush Avenue when a man approached her from behind and grabbed the victim’s iPhone right out of her hand. The suspect and the woman struggled, causing the victim to fall on the ground. A search of the area was conducted but turned up no results. The victim was not injured in the struggle.

Masked Thieves Rob Woman at Gunpoint

A woman was in front of 91 Gates Ave. between Clinton and Washington avenues at around midnight on Sept. 23, when she was robbed at gunpoint by two men in ski masks. The men made off with the woman’s purse, which contained her Droid cell phone, her iPod, her Massachusetts Driver’s License and a set of keys.

Neighborhood Dog Grooming Shop Falls Victim to Serial Robber

Who’s Your Doggy at 197 Adelphi St. between Myrtle and Willoughby avenues was . On Sept. 23 at 10 a.m., the suspect entered the store and produced a silver handgun, making off $100 cash. The suspect then told the victim to lie on the ground and count to 100, while the suspect fled the scene. Darryl Meachem has also been arrested in connection with several local robberies.

Woman Robbed Right Outside Home

A woman was walking into her home on St James Place between Lafayette and Dekalb avenues on Sept. 24 at midnight when her purse was grabbed from behind. The victim pulled her bag back, and the suspect hit the woman on the hand causing swelling and scratches. The suspect fled the scene on a red mountain bike with the bag, which contained some textbooks, an H&M sweater, folder, some gym clothes and assorted plastic containers totaling $85 in value.

Elderly Man Attacked by Unsuccessful Thief

A 63-year-old man was attacked on Sept. 24 at 2 p.m. on Carlton Avenue between the BQE and Flushing Avenue. The suspect grabbed the victim by the neck, punched him in the chest, and proceeded to throw the victim to the ground and kick him. The victim agreed to give the suspect his money, but a crowd began together at the scene and the suspect fled. The suspect was apprehended within a half hour of committing the crime.  

Man Assaulted in Dispute with Co-worker

A man hit his co-worker with a scale in a grocery at 700 Fulton St. between S. Portland Avenue and S. Oxford Street on Sept. 23. The victim’s suffered swollenness and pain in his left arm. The suspect was arrested at the location of the crime the next day.  

Victim’s Vehicle Robbed of Over $1,000 Worth of Items and Cash   

A man parked his vehicle on the corner of Willoughby and Waverly avenues for less than an hour at 12:10 p.m. on Sept. 19. He returned to his vehicle to find both front door locks broken and several items removed, including $900 in cash, his credit cards and an iPod Touch. The items had a total value of $1,150.

Unfinished Home Burglarized by a Handy Thief

A home under construction on Adelphi Street was broken into on Sept. 20 sometime between 6 p.m. and 8 a.m. the next day. Various tools and materials were left in the home by workers. Three electric saws and two sets of expensive wires were stolen. The theft was discovered in the morning when workers arrived and noticed the front door lock broken.

Thief Forces His Way into Apartment

A home on St. James Place between Gates Avenue and Clifton Place was burglarized sometime after 10 p.m. on Sept. 19 while the victim slept. The thief gained entrance to the apartment by bending the iron gates on the home’s rear window and managed to steal some silver bracelets and a white Mongoose bicycle.

Two Different Crimes Reported for One Building on Same Day

A woman sleeping in the bedroom of her home on Washington Avenue between Gates Avenue and Fulton Street was awoken by a stranger on Sept. 21 at 2:30 p.m. She asked the intruder who he was and he replied, “It’s just me.” The man then proceeded to leave out the front door. The locks on the woman’s bedroom door had been tampered with. That same day, between the hours of noon and 4 p.m., a man left the same residence, leaving a window slightly open. Someone climbed through the window and made off with several yellow metal rings, totaling about $200 in value.

Auto Shop Burglarized

An auto shop at 41 Cumberland St. between Flushing Avenue and the BQE was robbed sometime between 8 p.m. and 11 p.m. on Sept. 22. A neighbor called the shop’s owner at 3 a.m., saying that someone had broken in. The owner arrived at the shop to find the front gate open and seven amplifiers missing from a Mitsubishi Lancer that was inside the garage.

Cash Stolen from Home

A man returned to his home on Adelphi Street between Fulton Street and Green Avenue on Sept. 24 to find $165 in cash missing from his dresser. The man’s front door had also been damaged.

Man Robbed by Three Attackers

A man was on Monument Walk inside Ingersoll Houses on Sept. 19 when he was approached by one suspect asking if he wanted to buy marijuana. Another suspect appeared behind him and snatched the man’s $150 Android Evil HTC cellphone, while a third blocked the victim from running away. All three suspects then ran northbound on Monument Walk toward Park Avenue.

Neighborhood African Museum Burglarized

The Museum of Contemporary African Diasporan Arts at 80 Hanson Place at S. Portland Avenue was burglarized sometime during the weekend of Sept. 16. The victim placed her $1,200 Macbook Pro on her desk and left the office. The victim returned after the weekend and found her laptop missing.

Factory is Victimized by Early Morning Robbery

A factory at 11 Grand Ave. on the corner of Flushing and Grand avenues was robbed on Sept. 16, when a man entered the building and stole the wallet out a pair of pants hanging in someone’s office. The wallet contained about $100 in cash, a Chase credit card, and a NYS ID. The victim at first thought he misplaced the wallet, but after seeing a security tape, realized it had been stolen.

Woman’s $3,000 Check Stolen from Office

Someone stole a woman’s outgoing mail sometime between Sept. 8 and Sept. 20 from the victim’s office on Adelphi Street between Lafayette and Greene avenues. The mail included a check for $3,451, which the thief cashed at a Chase bank.

Thief Drives Away With Toyota Part

A man got into his Toyota 4Runner at 8:30 a.m. on Sept. 12 on the corner of Classon and Willoughby avenues, only to find that the car was making unusual noises and wouldn’t accelerate. The car was towed and mechanics discovered that the catalytic converter had been completely cut from the vehicle.

Man Robbed on the B52

A man stepped off a crowded B52 bus heading home on Sept. 19 at 9:30 p.m. Upon leaving the bus, the man noticed that his back pocket was unzipped and his wallet was missing. About $30 in items were taken, including a Driver’s License, the man’s social security card, his Chase credit card, a Wal-Mart card, and a YMCA gym membership card.

iPhone Snatched on C Train

On Sept. 21 at 11:40 a.m., a man was sitting in the first car of a northbound C train with his iPhone. The train pulled into the Clinton-Washington station, and a suspect snatched the man’s phone and fled the station. The victim chased after the suspect, but lost him at street level.

Woman Returns from Cruise to an Unwelcome Surprise

A woman returned to her home on Saint James Place between Lafayette and Dekalb avenues on Aug. 8 to find that her cell phone wasn’t working. After calling her AT&T provider, the woman found that while she had been gone on vacation, someone had acquired the last four digits of her social security number and bought a cell phone account in her name. The woman did not know the suspect and the cellphone account in question has since been cancelled.

$400 in Items Stolen from Vehicle

A man parked his vehicle on Lafayette Avenue between Fulton Street and Hanson Place on Sept. 14, and returned to find his bag of personal belongings missing from the vehicle. The items stolen included the man’s wallet, driver’s license, and undisclosed amount of cash and a Visa debit card, totaling $400 worth in all.

Laptop Stolen from Bench on Saint James Place

A man reported his laptop, hard drive, laptop charger, and cellphone charger were stolen on Sept. 24 when a man left his belongings on a bench near 61 St. James Place while talking to a friend. The items were worth $2,750 in total. Security cameras are available near the scene of the crime and will be reviewed.

Crime Finds Its "Target"

A woman shopping in the Target store at 139 Flatbush Ave. near Atlantic Terminal on Sept. 25, almost fell victim to a robbery while she was shopping at around 6:15 p.m. The suspect stole the victim’s purse and removed the victim’s wallet containing $54, as well as her credit card, iPod, T-Mobile cell phone and various cosmetics. The suspect then put the victim’s purse in a shopping cart and attempted to flee the scene, but was apprehended shortly after her attempt.
