Frugal Family: Cinco de Mayo

This stay at home dad is concerned about Mother's Day, but is hungry for Cinco de Mayo

Last week,  for the Frugal Family column.  This week, I’m focusing on a special day that many would consider to be much more important.  Cinco De Mayo is celebrated in bars, restaurants and college dorms across the U.S. (and hardly at all in Mexico).  According to Wikipedia, the world’s greatest and least accurate history resource, Cinco de Mayo “commemorates the Mexican army’s unlikely victory over French forces at the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862....”  To celebrate the occasion, I’ve compiled my top five deals in the neighborhood this Thursday.

Pequena Restaurant - Moe’s Bar may be gone, but the owners march on with Olea, Maggie Brown, and Pequena Restaurant.  All lunch specials come with free pico de gallo and chips at Pequena.  Add a $5 fresh lime margarita to the mix and tip a glass (or two) to Moe’s.

Habana Outpost - Enjoy the “famous corn” lathered in mayo for $2.00.  Then work off the calories, work up a sweat, and get a $1 discount by pedaling furiously on an exercise bike that powers a blender which makes you a tasty smoothie.

Luz Restaurant - Like the free plantain chips and salsa.  Love the rotisserie half chicken for $6.

Los Pollitos III - What better way to celebrate Cinco de Mayo than by challenging my wife to a taco eating contest?  With a grilled beef taco setting you back just $2.95, this is the place to do it (and I am certain to win as my wife is a vegetarian).

Mexican Ices - When the school bell rings at the end of the day, you are certain to find Mexican Ices being pedaled (literally and figuratively) out front to the kiddies.  Don’t miss out on this affordable delicacy, often sold for $1.
