Fort Greene Raises More Than $7K For Hurricane Sandy Victims

Brooklyn does love Brooklyn, it turns out.

At an event at Irondale Center last week, over 500 attendees from 20 performance arts organizations came together to raise $7,150 for victims of Hurricane Sandy.

Brooklyn Loves Brooklyn, a benefit hosted by Laurie Cumbo and Ralph McDaniels and sponsored by Councilwoman Letitia James, D-Brooklyn, was one of many locally based efforts to help out those hit hardest by the historic storm.

At Pratt Institute's Higgins Hall, graduate students from the school's urban planning department like Kyle Kozar gathered donations and drove them to Far Rockaway.

Across the neighborhood, organizers like Gineen Finch commandeered a space at The Chocolate Factory for clothes, food and other goods for Sandy victims.

As much as Fort Greene has chipped in to help, there's much more to be done before the worst affected parts of the city return to anything resembling normal.
