Fort Greene Car Owners No. 87 on List of '100 Most Powerless NYers': [POLL]

Barclays Center's imminent opening cited as major factor in growing headache for area motorists.

Attention car owners endlessly circling the block for an open space in Fort Greene: you are in good company.

Unfortunately, come September when the Barclays Center is scheduled to open, things are only going to get worse. And there's little, if anything, that you can do about it, according to a list published in this week's Village Voice.

Fort Greene car owners made No. 87 on the Voice's "100 Most Powerless New Yorkers," with the flood of cars expected to descend on the Barclays Center and the uncertain future of permit parking legislation in Albany the main culprit.

Penned by Fort Greene resident and Village Voice staff writer Steven Thrasher, the blurb categorizes the state bill needed to allow the city to set up a parking permit system as "dead on arrival."

"Once the Barclays Center opens next fall at Atlantic Yards with a mere 1,100 parking spots to accommodate its 19,000-seat capacity, expect streets in Spike Lee's home 'hood to become gridlocked with cars looking for nonexistent parking spaces during some 200 planned events a year," it reads.

What do you think? Do Fort Greene drivers deserve to be singled out on this list of powerlessness, or do you still have hope for a positive parking outcome?

Actually, Fort Greene car owners have the power to get rid of their cars, take the subway, ride a bike, or walk. I'm sure there's more than a handful of car owners who don't really NEED to drive. Save the parking spaces for the people who do.

I got rid of my car years ago and have no regrets. On the rare occasion I need wheels I use zipcar. No more car payments, insane insurance payments, parking tickets and the annoyance of looking for a spot.

I've done the same as techcrunch. So much money saved, so much aggravation avoided. And Zipcar's within walking distance!
