Con Ed Workers Return to Bargaining Table

Lockout now in its second week.

A potential break in the nine-day standoff between workers and management at utility giant Con Edison came Tuesday with word of renewed negotiations between the two sides, according to NY1.

The workers have been locked out since July 1 after talks failed over a new contract covering thousands of Con Ed workers.

Councilwoman Letitia James, D-Brooklyn, and Councilwoman Melissa Mark-Viverito, D-Manhattan, came out strongly this week on the side of the workers, calling management's action "irresponsible and extreme."

Around 5,000 managers are operating the system, which covers the five boroughs and a portion of Westchester County, while the lockout continues.

The talks come as the unusually hot summer weather of the past few weeks continues to abate throughout the region. High temperatures are expected to remain in the mid-80s for the rest of the week.
