Brooklyn Bike Patrol Expands to Fort Greene-Clinton Hill

Attention Fort Greene and Clinton Hill residents: Brooklyn Bike Patrol has come to a subway stop near you.

The on-call 'buddy' system is now available at Lafayette, Clinton-Washington and Franklin avenue stations on the C line, as well as the Clinton-Washington and Classon avenue stations on the G line.

Set up in the wake of several in South Slope and Windsor Terrace over the past several months, the service allows women to call, email, Facebook or Twitter for an accompanied walk home from 25 subway stations.

And the number is growing.

Founded on Sept. 14 by Jay Ruiz, the service has expanded from 11 stations to cover the Brooklyn neighborhoods of Park Slope, Kensington, Sunset Park, Carroll Gardens, Prospect Heights, and now, Fort Greene-Clinton Hill.

According to Ruiz, BBP averages 7 to 10 calls a night, with more on Saturdays. "We don't expect to get 100 calls, it's just that with the recent crimes in Park Slope and Windsor Terrace, we are going to help all the people we can get home safely," he said.

The service has become so popular that state Sen. Eric Adams, D-Brooklyn, has vowed to secure funds to get winter coats for BBP's 11 volunteers—all of whom have undergone background checks at the 72nd Precinct, Ruiz said.
